Hughes Sports CFL Week 1 Preview: Revenge, Redemption, and Rivalries
Three games to open the 2026 CFL season, and every one of them carries a storyline worth watching
Welcome back to the Hughes Sports Podcast newsletter! The Old Man is out of town this week, which means no audio show, but there is absolutely no way we are missing out on breaking down the kickoff of the 2026 CFL season.
We have a massive three-game slate to set the tone for the year, featuring a bitter playoff rematch, a high-stakes prairie battle, and two teams looking to rewrite their narratives completely.
Here is the official Hughes Sports breakdown of Week 1.
Thursday: Montreal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats
The Storyline: A bitter rematch of the 2025 Eastern Final. Montreal broke Hamilton’s hearts on a walk-off field goal to punch their ticket to the 112th Grey Cup, so the revenge narrative is already writing itself.
Hamilton’s Offence: Bo Levi Mitchell led the league with 5,296 yards and 36 touchdowns last year. He’s armed with Kenny Lawler (fresh off a new three-year deal), but they need to show immediate chemistry to keep pace right out of the gate.
Montreal’s Reload: Davis Alexander is looking to prove he can sustain last year’s magic. With Anthony Calvillo taking over play-calling duties, expect the Alouettes to test Hamilton’s secondary early with quick, intermediate passes to targets like Tyson Philpot.
The X-Factor: Hamilton’s ability to stop the run. If Montreal’s Travis Theis can establish the ground game early, it opens up the perimeter and forces Mitchell to watch from the sidelines.
Friday: Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders
The Storyline: A heavyweight clash out West. The Bombers kept their core intact while making huge free-agent splashes, while the Stampeders are looking for Vernon Adams Jr. looking to build on a strong first season in Calgary.
Winnipeg’s Arms Race: The Bombers added receiver Tim White, defensive lineman Jake Ceresna, and offensive tackle Jarell Broxton. New offensive coordinator Tommy Condell has Zach Collaros and Brady Oliveira at his disposal, making this unit absolutely terrifying on paper.
Calgary’s Counter: Adams Jr. has serious weapons in Jalen Philpot and workhorse running back Dedrick Mills. Calgary’s defence is much more established this year, and the addition of Jaylon Hutchings on the interior line is huge for their pass rush.
The X-Factor: The trenches at McMahon. If Calgary’s defensive line can disrupt Collaros and keep him from getting into a rhythm with his new weapons, the Stampeders can protect their home turf.
Saturday: Edmonton Elks at Ottawa Redblacks
The Storyline: Two teams desperate to shed their 2025 basement-dweller status. Both made major offseason changes, and this is a massive tone-setter for their playoff ambitions.
Ottawa’s New Era: Ryan Dinwiddie makes his debut as head coach, and Jake Maier won the starting QB job over Dru Brown. They invested heavily in their defence (adding Nyles Morgan and Demerio Houston) and brought in running back Greg Bell to balance the offence.
Edmonton’s Momentum: The Elks finished 2025 strong, missing the playoffs by a hair. Cody Fajardo is under center and has reunited with receiver Austin Mack. They also beefed up their pass rush with Malik Carney.
The X-Factor: The battle of the backfields. Ottawa’s Bell and Edmonton’s Justin Rankin are both highly capable of taking over a game. Whichever team controls the clock and takes the pressure off their quarterback will walk away with the crucial opening-week win.
