I am caught between “Trust the Process” and “Throw the Remote at the TV.” Here’s the realistic (and slightly painful) roadmap for the 2026 Trade Deadline.

1. The Evander Kane Sweepstakes

According to the insiders, Colorado and Dallas are showing interest. Kane is 34 and a pending UFA; he doesn’t fit into the five-year plan.

The Reality: We probably will need to keep 50% of his salary. It’s frustrating to pay a player to score goals for a competitor, but this is the only way to get a 2nd-round pick from a contender.

The Fan Take: If we keep him just to finish 30th, it’s a failure. Get the pick, move on, and let’s watch some kids from Abbotsford instead.

2. The Bottom-Six “Playoff Grit” (Kämpf & Blueger)

Every year, we hear the same thing: “Contenders love defensive centers.” We have two in David Kämpf and Teddy Blueger. They won’t lead us to a Cup in 2030, but they are the kind of bottom-six playoff grit that teams like Tampa or Florida overpay for in March.

The Reality: Blueger has been hot since returning from injury, scoring 4 goals in 8 games. His value won’t get any higher. Kämpf is steady and reliable. Most importantly, he’s cheap at $1.1 million.

The Fan Take: I like these guys; they work hard. But if we can’t turn “hard work on the fourth line” into a 2nd or 3rd-round pick during a 30th-place season, what are we doing? If they’re still here on March 7, it’s just poor asset management.

3. The Elephant in the Room: Elias Pettersson

Petey has about 34 points in 57 games. At $11.6 million, we need a superstar, not just a solid player. Buffalo is being mentioned as a potential destination, but fitting that contract into anyone’s cap is a nightmare.

The Reality: The Olympic roster freeze gives everyone some breathing room. If a team like Buffalo offers a package centered around a young talent like Konsta Helenius and a 1st round pick, Allvin has to consider it.

The Fan Take: We want to love Petey, but we can’t embrace a $92 million contract that isn’t producing. If he isn’t the cornerstone, he’s just a burden.

4. The “Culture” Trade: Brock Boeser or Conor Garland?

This is where it gets tough. Both players have been key parts of this team, but reports from The Athletic suggest they are the veterans most likely to be traded. Garland’s no-move clause doesn’t kick in until July 1st—the clock is ticking on our leverage.

The Reality: Boeser is signed through 2032 at $7.25 million. Moving that contract will be challenging unless management opts for quantity over quality in return.

The Fan Take: Trading Boeser feels like losing the last piece of the team’s identity. But if it brings back a top defensive prospect to play with Zeev Buium, it’s worth considering.

Final Thoughts

We already traded Kiefer Sherwood for two 2nd-rounders, a rare win for the front office. Now, the mission is clear: Don’t get sentimental. This roster is the bottom of the league for a reason. The “mushy middle” is gone; long live the rebuild.

After completing the paperwork, I instantly turned on the radio to listen to SN650, obviously it wasn't a joke or the wrong Hughes named. It was at that point, while driving home, it sorta dawned on me that the night before was the last time us Canucks fans were blessed to watched the best player in 20+ years to put on the Blue and Green and I was mad that management/ownership put us in this situation and also sad that we never won anything with Quinn. This is where being irrational is frustrating, someone I've never met or had any real relationship made me sad enough to be fighting back some tears as I drove home.

Now, let's put this in perspective, in 459 games played over 8 years, not only did we see Hughes turn into a leader on this team, we saw him become arguably the BEST Defenseman and a top 5 player in the NHL. In those 8 years he only saw the playoffs 2 times. Once in the Covid Bubble playoffs and once a few years ago when it looked like this organization finally stumbled into a team that could win. 30 Games in the playoffs and 26 points, from a Defenseman is ridiculous. But injuries, internal squabbles, poor management decisions put us in this situation and whether you call us Irrational or Die-hard, we are pissed off at the handling of this. Don't get me wrong the return for Hughes was better than even the best guesses could have been, even if someone guessed almost to a tee what the deal would look like in May, that's a conversation for a different time.

Quinn Hughes did everything and anything for this team. The Canucks organization failed him. The ownership and management have to wear that. Quinn didn't fail the Canucks, the Canucks failed Quinn and the Irrational fans.

To Quinn (if you happen to find this): Speaking for myself and other irrational fans, we loved your passion, your abilities, you as a human and are proud to have you called you our Captain! We wish you luck in Minnesota, and you'll always have a fan in me. I hope your name will be inscribed on Lord Stanley's Cup sooner rather than later.

For these major leagues, a player’s salary and the overall team payroll are fundamental, easily accessible data points that are critical to the public understanding and analysis of the sport. Without public salaries, fans and media are effectively locked out of the Cap Conversation. It becomes impossible to have meaningful, informed debates or truly analyze the team’s strategies against the CFL’s salary cap structure. This restriction severely limits the quality and depth of off-season discussion, reducing it to speculation rather than expert commentary. Full salary transparency is, therefore, more than just a convenience for the media; it is an Argument for Parity. By embracing this standard, the CFL would shed the perception of being an amateur or “lesser” league and earn a badge of professionalism that aligns it with the continent’s major institutions, demonstrating its commitment to modern, open sports governance.

Beyond aligning with professional standards, public salary data is the essential fuel for year-round fan engagement and off-season hype. Transparency transforms the spectator into an Armchair GM, allowing fans to realistically engage with off-season news. Instead of guessing, supporters can dedicate themselves to creating informed mock rosters, accurately calculating team cap space, and scrutinizing free-agent signings with actual, verifiable data. This creates a deeper, more meaningful connection to the team’s management decisions. Crucially, this transparency would ignite Media and Content Growth. The immediate result could be the generation of a vibrant new ecosystem of independent data sites, podcasts, and articles dedicated to CFL capology, look at the unmitigated success that PuckPedia is. This free, expert-level analysis drives year-round interest and provides the league with a constant source of discussion and free marketing. The contract details become The Narrative, the starting point for every major debate. When a star player is signed, the conversation instantly shifts from simple excitement to critical analysis: “Is he worth $X?” and “How does this signing affect next year’s budget?” This level of detailed scrutiny elevates the sport’s profile, keeping the CFL relevant even when no games are being played.

A key counter-argument against transparency is the fear that revealing CFL salaries—which are inevitably lower than those in the NFL, could fuel negative “poverty league” rhetoric. However, the reality is that the CFL can easily rebut this narrative with context and facts. The current minimum salary, for instance, is a respectable wage within the Canadian job market, and the average player earns significantly more than the national average. By choosing secrecy, the CFL is allowing outsiders to speculate negatively without constraint. Public data flips this script, enabling the league to begin controlling the narrative. Transparency allows the CFL to professionally contextualize its compensation structure within its specific revenue model and the Canadian economic landscape. By proactively providing the facts, the league can shift the conversation from speculative “poverty” accusations to one focused on market value and financial sustainability, effectively neutralizing the most common critique.

The move to salary transparency is not just an administrative or public relations reform; it is a critical step in Empowering Players and Agents. Public contract information is the single most important tool available to agents for ensuring their clients are being paid fair market value based on their position, performance, and league-wide comparables. Without this data, negotiation is based on guesswork, favoring the team that holds the key information. Furthermore, transparency helps the CFL Players’ Association (CFLPA) advocate for internal consistency across all teams, ensuring no single player or team is unfairly inflating or deflating the market in secret, which harms the economic interests of all players. The growing support for this change is evidenced by the fact that the CFLPA is reportedly now open to discussing the issue, recognizing that the long-term pros of market stability and enhanced professional perception far outweigh individual privacy concerns.

The evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that public salary disclosure is a necessary and strategic move that will solidify the CFL’s future. Transparency directly strengthens the league’s legitimacy, deepens fan investment by fostering informed engagement, and decisively modernizes its business practices to align with top-tier professional sports leagues across the continent. It is a win-win that elevates the game for every stakeholder. The time for deliberation is over. We urge the CFL and CFLPA to finalize this crucial step and put the debate to rest. It is time for the Canadian Football League to fully embrace the data-driven world of professional sports, demonstrating that its commitment to parity and professionalism extends both on and off the field.

It was asked at the press conference as the last time the CFL launched something new, the stats powered by Genius Sports, was nothing short of a disaster on if Genius Sports was going to be leading this upgrade to the sites and app. While Johnston wasn’t part of that launch he was aware of it as he was still associated with the league during his time at Bell, he assured us that there shouldn’t be any issues like this in the future and while he applauded the work Genius Sports has done since then, as they are not a website and app experts they will not be associated with the new site and app.

Another huge announcement is that the CFL will finally be cashing in on the Fantasy craze that started nearly 20 years ago by launching a Years-long fantasy league that will have a wide distribution but doesn’t have specifics yet. While I am a long time proponent of having a proper fantasy league, if the league doesn’t have the foresight to partner with one of Yahoo or ESPN it will be harder to bring in new fans. ESPN recently touted that they have 14 Million people playing Fantasy Football during the 2025 NFL Season and as per the Fantasy Sports and Gaming Association as of 2022 there were 62.5 million people playing fantasy sports in the USA and Canada. If the CFL can tap into this market it won’t only help grow the game to be the must see sport it can be but also encourage growth with the younger fanbase that Commissioner Johnston is after.

While waiting on the specifics and the distribution for the Fantasy Leagues, I am excited but holding my breath as there have been many letdowns from the CFL world in terms of their digital footprint. If they nail this, it could possibly help not only the league grow with the fanbase but also help the negotiations with the TV rights deal that expires after the 2026 season.
